Artificial Intelligence in Oncology: The Rise of the Augmented Oncologist
Exploring how deep learning, pathomics, and clinical AI integration empower clinicians to augment judgment, reduce administrative burdens, and drive patient-centered care.
Dr. Nikhil Thaker Medical Director – Radiation Oncology
Patient Care Must Drive Technology
The central theme of the presentation is that artificial intelligence should be viewed not as a replacement for human oncologists, but as a tool to augment clinical judgment, reduce administrative burdens, and optimize workflow efficiency.
By automating repetitive and data-heavy tasks, AI tools return the most valuable asset to clinicians: more time for patient-centered, compassionate care.
Talk Outline & Clinical Paradigms
Dr. Thaker will review the practical implementation of AI across the oncology workflow, from initial diagnostic imaging through pathology, radiation planning, and patient-centric LLM agents.
AI & Deep Learning Fundamentals
A broad introduction to machine learning, deep learning, CNNs, and LLMs. Learn how these tools process complex multimodal oncology data (EHR text, digital pathology, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and digital health sensors).
Breast Cancer Detection & Imaging
Reviewing AI-enhanced mammography, including risk prediction models (Mirai), Google/DeepMind mammography work, and the MASAI randomized trial. We discuss diagnostic performance for ultrasound/MRI and radiologist workload reduction.
Precision Radiation Oncology
Exploring AI-assisted autocontouring and rapid treatment planning using tools like Radformation and LimbusAI. Learn how rapid CT segmentation reduces variance, improves efficiency, and saves physician time.
Digital Pathology & Pathomics
Analyzing whole-slide imaging and AI biomarker assessment (ER, PR, HER2, Ki-67, PD-L1, TILs) alongside the emergence of large pathology foundation models like Virchow to support cancer detection and subtyping.
LLMs & Clinical AI Agents
How Large Language Models act as foundations for clinical trial matching, summarization, reasoning, and patient chatbots. Explores AI agents interacting with systems like Epic, Cerner, Aria, Flatiron, and outside records.
Digital Twins & Drug Development
Multimodal patient models designed to simulate personalized care pathways and the application of AlphaFold in protein structure prediction, variant modeling, and drug discovery.
Clinical Failure Modes & Risks
A critical look at the dark side of AI dependency: de-skilling, never-skilling, mis-skilling, and automation bias. Addressing concerns that over-dependence may weaken clinician diagnostic skill and trainee development.
Active AI Partnership Framework
Moving from passive use to active partnership. Learn how to stress-test AI reasoning with independent judgment, verify outputs against primary data, maintain "AI-off" skills, and implement human overrides.
